How to Install or Update SolidCAM / InventorCAM Post Processor Files

When you receive an updated or custom post processor from SolidCAM Technical Support, follow these steps to locate your current directory and correctly install the new files.

Step 1: Verify Your Current Post Processor Location

Before copying any new files, you need to find where your system currently looks for them.

  1. Close any open SolidCAM or InventorCAM files, but keep SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor open.
  2. Open your CAM settings depending on your software:
    • For SolidCAM users: Go to the main menu and click Tools > SolidCAM > SolidCAM Settings.
    • For InventorCAM users: Click the CAM Settings button located in the InventorCAM ribbon.
  3. In the settings window, select the Default CNC-Controller page from the left-hand menu.
  4. Look at the top field on the right side labeled Post-Processor files directory.
    • Note: Post Processor files must reside in a folder named GPPTOOL. The standard installation path is typically:C:\Users\Public\Documents\SolidCAM\SolidCAM20XX\GPPTOOL
  5. Note this file path down, then completely close SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor.

Step 2: Extract and Save the New Post Processor Files

SolidCAM post processors consist of two vital files: a .gpp file and a .vmid file.

  1. Open the email sent to you by SolidCAM Tech Support.
  2. Download the attached files.
    1. ⚠️ IMPORTANT: If the files were sent in a .zip archive, you must extract them first. Right-click the folder and select Extract All before moving them.
  1. Copy and paste the new .gpp and .vmid files into the GPPTOOL directory path you located in Step 1.
  2. When prompted by Windows to overwrite the existing files, choose Copy and Replace (or Accept).

 Step 3: Verify the Update

  1. Restart SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor.
  2. Re-open an existing SolidCAM or InventorCAM project file.
  3. Generate your G-Code to confirm that the changes have been successfully applied.

If you encounter any issues during the installation or if your G-Code does not output correctly, please reply directly to your active support ticket or contact SolidCAM Technical Support.
